1970年代以降、すっかり寡作になったウェイン・ショーター。Native Dancer (1975)からAtlantis(1985)の中間ぐらいからジャズを聴きだしたので、彼のアルバムを待つ、という感覚が常態化していたような気がする。
それにしても2010年代に入ってもツアーを行ったり、新作を出したりで、変わらぬ音楽活動に眼を見張ったり。SNSでは車椅子姿となり、流石に最終コーナーを廻ったように感じ、少し寂しい。WRの全盛期からでも40年だからなあ。
5年ぶりのアルバムが昨年出た。カルテットのメンバーは変わらない。録音も2016年なので、内容もそんなに変わらないだろう。過剰なパッケージも気にくわないなあ。そんなことで、LPレコードセットで2万円を越える本アルバムには手が出なかった。結局、在庫処分の新品を拾ってしまった訳だけど、音楽と関係ない商売っ気に後味ならぬ前味？の悪さが気になた。
このアルバムの前半にはカルテットにOrpheus Chamber Orchestraも加わっている。これも直ぐには買わなかった理由。試聴して、内容が薄まっているように思えたから。しかし改めて聴いていると、カルテットだろうが、室内オーケストラだろうが、ショーターのソロがあろうがなかろうが、全てがショーターの曲であり、世界。彼の音楽が凝縮されたアルバム。今まで聴いた彼のアルバムの記憶を反芻しながら、前進するショーターを聴いているのだ。汎世界的な音の広がりを。稀代の作曲者であった、といことを再認識した。そうだよなあ、WRでもショーターの曲は好きだった。
カルテットの演奏でも、ショーターのあの管の音がさっと音空間に線を入れていく。昔よりは音数は減っているようにも思う。しかし音の軌跡は紛れもない、あの世界が依然輝きを放っている。40年、変わらずに、だ。嬉しい。
