デビュー盤しか残さなかった人。彗星のように現れて、去っていった印象がある。
ボクの場合、Wynton Malsalisのデビュー盤で名前を覚えて、Stingのライヴ盤できっちりピンが留まった感じかな。
先日、Miroslav VitousのECM盤で彼のピアノの良さを改めて認識し、このアルバムを入手した：
新主流派の少し先・フリー寄りの硬派な音から、欧州系の共演者に合わせきる煌めきのあるピアノの音響、さらにはフュージョン寄りまで、玉手箱のような多様な音の持ち主であり、だからその正体がよくわからなかった、が当時の印象かな。
このデビュー盤は、そのような彼の多様性をそのままパッケージにしたようなアルバム。散らかった印象はあるのだけど、一つ一つの演奏は聴き応えがあるもので、早逝が惜しまれる。
硬い演奏もいいのだけど、beyond Weather Report的な印象を残す曲や、Jaco Pastouriousのデビュー盤を意識したようなDon Aliasとのデュオも面白い。もう少し命永らえたら、きっと素晴らしい音を聴かせてくれたのだろうな、と思った。
