1980年当時、人気絶頂だったウェザー・リポートをよく聴いていた。しかし、それも8:30あたりまでで、Black Marketあたりが頂点だと思った。ジャコ・パストリアスが嫌いだった、ということではなくて、ウェイン・ショーターの存在感のようなものが、アルバム毎に減じていたから。
8:30以降は殆ど聴いていない。だからウェザー・リポートの事実上の解散期に入ってからのショーターのアルバム、コロンビアからの３枚は実に嬉しかった。
このアルバムを店頭で手にとって、家でシールドを切ったときのドキドキは、今でも覚えている。Native Dancerから10年振りの新作だったから。内容的には、ウェザー・リポートと通じる曲作りで、しかもショーターのサックスにぴったり焦点が当たった内容。今、聴き直すとキーボードの音が貧弱だなあとも思うが関係ない。全面的にショーターの曲とサックスの音を聴くアルバムであって、10年間の飢餓を埋め合わすに相応しい、一枚。事実上のワン・ホーン・アルバム。
当時のショーターは50代前半。この感じで突き進んでくれたら嬉しいなあ、と思ったのも懐かしい。確かに、コロンビアから３作、ほぼ毎年出ている。その後、また長い沈黙に入る。とても大きな期待値に相応しい程のアルバムは出なかった、と思っている。それでも、このアルバムから30年以上経った今でも、新作が出ることに感謝したい。
